It was a tremendous week in Detroit for the OpenAdditive team, making our RAPID+TCT debut as exhibitors this year, and also our "PANDA" system debut -- the first truly open-architecture laser powder bed fusion system available for commercial sale. If you visited our booths at recent events (DMC, AIAA SciTech, Mil AM Summit, AMUG, and AeroDef Manufacturing), you surely noticed something a bit different this time... like the new name! So a little context..
In 2017, Universal Technology Corporation consolidated AM acquisitions and internal initiatives into a dedicated business unit dubbed "3D Innovation Lab". The new business unit was launched as a product-focused R&D lab, working on metals and multi-material AM to address defense and industry needs. We've been supported in this quest by some awesome partners, including the University of Dayton Research Institute. In the last 8 months, we've experienced reorganization and growth, following installation and testing of our first-gen laser powder bed fusion systems and sensor packages.
Rebranding as "OpenAdditive" is our next step, marking transition from an R&D lab into an integrated product team spanning system solutions, process monitoring solutions, advanced technology development, and applications development. We've now retired the "3D Innovation Lab" label. We installed the first system with our new look just last week (more on that soon) and the next is set for next week. Getting a system to and from Detroit in the intervening week was no small feat!
I hope you had a chance to meet some of us, as ten from our team (half of us) made the trek up from Dayton during the week. It was a great opportunity to share what we're doing, connect to a wide range of users, and explore the latest developments in the industry.
